Quenched-in liquid in glass

چکیده

Abstract Glasses have long been considered as frozen liquids because of the similarity between their static amorphous structures. While modern theories about glass transition suggest that may result from supercooling a heterogeneous liquid contains fast and slow regions, it remains unclear whether such physical picture applies to metallic glasses, which are densely packed solid was once believed be vitrified homogeneous liquid. However, in recent work published Nature Materials , Chang et al provide compelling evidence show glasses contain liquid-like atoms behave high-temperature stress relaxation. Being activated under cyclic loading, this quenched-in results relaxation process, is discovered variety glasses. Their important deliver strong message dynamic microstructure containing liquid- solid-like atoms. Most importantly, outcome research provides insight into nature glass-transition also helps unravel structure-property relations.

Quenched-vacancy induced spin-glass order.

The ferromagnetic phase of an Ising model in d=3 , with any amount of quenched antiferromagnetic bond randomness, is shown to undergo a transition to a spin-glass phase under sufficient quenched bond dilution. This result, demonstrated here with the numerically exact global renormalization-group solution of a d=3 hierarchical lattice, is expected to hold true generally, for the cubic lattice an...

Spin-Glass and Related Orderings in Quenched Random-Spin Systems

A general model in which the nearest-neighbor exchange interactions J(x⃗ ,x⃗ ′) are of the form J(x⃗ ,x⃗ ′)=J1+J2ε(x⃗ )ε(x⃗ ′)+J3[ε(x⃗ )+ε(x⃗ ′)]+J4μ(x⃗ ,x⃗ ′) is considered. Here ε(x⃗ ) is a random site variable and μ(x⃗ ,x⃗ ′) is a random bond variable. It is argued that J4 tends to produce the Edwards-Anderson-type spin glass, whereas J2 produces a different type of phase which is like an alloy of up and...

Quenched Disorder and Spin-Glass Correlations in XY Nematics

Abstract. We present a theoretical study of the equilibrium ordering in a 3D XY nematic system with quenched random disorder. Within this model, treated with the Replica trick and Gaussian variational method, the correlation length is obtained as a function of local nematic order parameter Q and the effective disorder strength Γ. These results, ξ ∼ Qe 2 and ξ ∼ (1/Γ)e, clarify what happens in t...

Spinodal phase separation in liquid films with quenched disorder.

We study spinodal phase separation in unstable thin liquid films on chemically disordered substrates via simulations of the thin-film equation. The disorder is characterized by immobile patches of varying size and Hamaker constant. The effect of disorder is pronounced in the early stages (amplification of fluctuations), remains during the intermediate stages and vanishes in the late stages (dom...

Methods of Reading Liquid-in-Glass Thermometers

The objective of this paper is to analyse the different methods of reading Liquid-in-Glass Thermometers (LiGTs). The aim is to minimise uncertainty contributions in calibrations of LiGTs and make them easier to use. The inherent problem of the LiGTs is the objectivity of reading and hence the resulting uncertainty contribution. Most commonly, LiGTs are read with the naked eye or by using a magn...
